Yes. Glass expands in high heat and direct sun, so a chip that looked stable in the morning can run into a long crack by the afternoon. Then you get in and hit the air conditioning on a scorching windshield. That sudden swing from hot glass to cold air is one of the most common ways a small chip gives way.

Park in shade whenever you can and use a sunshade. Long-term UV exposure gradually makes glass brittle and hazy and breaks down wiper rubber, which happens faster in the California sun. Blowing sand and highway grit also pit the glass. Clean it gently, and never hose cold water onto a windshield that has been baking.
