A Brief History of Auto Glass.

Posted by Joshua on Thursday Sep 20, 2012 Under Auto Glass

The necessity of Auto Glass is dated to the early 1900’s predates several other modern automobile inventions and features. With the modern combustion automobile starting in the 1890’s the need for more significant protection than goggles became apparent as drivers attempted travel at higher speeds and in more inclement conditions than a sunny dry day.. As with most modern auto parts modern auto glass is fairly different than how it originated. Over the years, vast improvements have been made in windshield design and materials as well as windshield repair and maintenance.

The original windshields debuted in approximately 1904. They were made of heavy plate glass and, as the windshield wiper wouldn’t come for some time, got dirty very fast. Many of them were a two piece affair that simply folded down once they had gotten to filthy to see through allowing the driver an unobstructed view at the expense of protection from the elements. Plate glass was ultimately a poor design that often shattered and presented numerous safety issues of their own.

The safety concerns that plagued the early plate glass windshields lead to the invention of various types of safety glass over the early Twentieth Century. Variations arose from British and French scientists alike, mostly involving laminated glass or multiple panes of plate glass with a cellulose layer in between. In 1927 Henry Ford used a British glass called Triplex into his automobiles, this was effective but temporary as the layers would discolor.

By the 1950s wrap around windshields had become commonplace, as well as side windows and vents style windows. Vehicles had also moved into using a tempered glass for windshields and windows, was a huge improvement over previous plate glass variations. Tempered glass is heated to extreme temperatures and is dramatically more resilient to impacts and strains than plate glass. Perhaps even more importantly tempered glass doesn’t shatter in the same way plate glass does when an impact or stress factor does  cause major damage. It pebbles and maintains cohesion far better than even earlier laminated glass windshields.

Modern auto glass takes on a wide range of shapes and sizes. Custom windows, one sided wraps and a huge variety of shapes both functional and visual are commonplace. Modern windshields can feature internal powered defrosting components. Modern windows are a far cry from the flip down when dirty windshields of days past, in the U.S. powered windows are commonplace on most new models of cars rolling up and down with the touch of a button.

Modern glass offers another option that has become increasingly more popular.  Repair rather than actual replacement of broken glass components is not only commonplace, it’s easy. Auto glass repair is done both in the shop and at mobile locations and a wide range of business has sprung up around both options. Unlike the heavy panes of glass auto glass is relatively light and easy to work with. Making auto glass repair and replacement the easiest it has been in automobile history.

Auto Glass Basics, knowing components.

Posted by Joshua on Tuesday Sep 11, 2012 Under Auto Glass

It’s easy to get confused about specific terminology in the auto glass world. With numerous types of windows all over a vehicle a little confusion is certainly understandable. Most of the varying types of window are easy to identify once an understanding of terminology has been established. And the window assembly isn’t much more difficult that that. Knowing this basic terminology can go a long way towards helping motorists get the glass services they need and the value they want.

Window Types:

As far as actual window types go there is a fair amount of information but it’s not too difficult.  Everyone knows the windshield is the large piece of glass that protects the driver from wind and road hazards. The read window is general windshield sized but may not wrap around quite as far. The front and rear door windows typically roll up and down and sit in the door with their namesake. Rear quarter windows are used in larger vehicles to give all around visibility. And vent windows are the small normally triangular pieces that help frame out many window shapes. Most vents don’t open in modern vehicles.

Window Functionality:

Tracks keep the window in its place in the door as it goes up and down. The window regulator is the device that moves the window up and down in the tracks. A handle connects to the window regulator on non powered models. In powered windows the window motor supplies power to the regulator and the power button activates the motor sending the window up and down. Lastly window molding holds the windshield in place and various adhesives can be used to keep the windshield molding in place.

Tools and Services:

Many windshield repair tools are on the market most all of them involve fusing resin and glass to repair the windshield itself. A windshield molding release tool is a knife like object used to cut the windshield molding away from the vehicle.  Some techs use a heat gun to rapidly dry the adhesives. A good pair of gloves goes a long way in the auto glass industry as well as so much glass is involved.

Knowing these industry basics can both help drivers save a few bucks as well as feeling like they understand what a technician is saying to them. Knowing what is required to fix or replace a window is the first step in knowing what auto glass services should cost. Drivers who can keep in mind the basics to windows, window functionality and the tools and services used will find auto glass mishaps far easier to navigate.

The Importance of Auto Glass Maintanance.

Posted by Joshua on Friday Sep 7, 2012 Under Uncategorized

Auto glass maintenance is as important as any type of routine automotive maintenance. When a transmission, drive train, engine or electrical components fail, the vehicle tends to fail altogether. Even though a cracked or damaged windshield doesn’t prevent the vehicle from starting it can easily make a car or truck thoroughly unsafe to drive. A broken or shattered windshield makes a vehicle unable to drive and illegal to be on the road in many states. Maintaining auto glass isn’t difficult but is often ignored. Unfortunately for many drivers, small problems can turn into big problems amazingly fast.  Problems that can leave a vehicle basically unable to be driver. It’s easy to let a windshield crack turn into a shattered window or other roadside nightmare. But it’s even easier to have the crack dealt with in a timely manner, protecting you, your vehicle and other motorists that you share the road with.

Cracks, nicks and chips in a windshield absolutely can lead to roadside disasters. They weaken the overall structural integrity of the glass making it far more likely to shatter when exposed to outside pressure or extreme weather conditions. Cracks will spread in cold or hot climates and from the natural stress put on the windshield by driving. Motorists traveling in rocky regions or anywhere they expect hard objects may impact their windshield need to take extra care to ensure they have a fully functioning and safe shield from debris at all times. The good news to all of this is that auto glass repair and installation is easier and more affordable than it has ever been, so there is no excuse for a cracked or broken windshield. Many glass restoration shops will even preform the work at a location of your choice, making it that much easier.

Auto glass repair continues to grow more affordable and easier on the driver. An increasingly diverse auto glass market has given a wide range of prices and options. Discount auto glass is readily available at all points of the brand and pricing spectrum. Installation has also gotten far easier as a wide range of shops and services that specialize in auto glass have entered the market and are offering installation and repair services at a wide range of prices. This means that drivers have more options and a wider ranges of value to choose from. It also means careful motorists can get the best in service at a pace and a price that fits their immediate needs.

Auto glass was considered prohibitively expensive by many drivers in latter decades, leading to cracks and minor damage being left to spread and leading to even worse damage and accidents. This hasn’t been necessary for some time, but many drivers still pay far too much for auto glass services. Auto glass discounters have become increasingly more common and accessible.  50% to 60% mark downs from manufacturer suggested prices are not at all uncommon. Shops with these deep discounts are recommended to drivers who want to save a few dollars.

In the U.S. as recently as the 1990’s a large portion of auto glass repair was preformed in dealerships and standard auto maintenance shops. Particularly in rural areas. Oftentimes these services were preformed at huge markup compared to the actual labor and cost of the replacement glass. Just as the market for glass has opened up widely, the options for replacement and repair services has expanded dramatically in two decades. Glass repair specialty shops as well as mobile glass repair shops and services are much more common. Mobile repair in particular has made the process of glass replacement and repair far easier and more accessible to a wide range of motorists.

The combination of accessibility and discount means that motorists can save big because of the current market. Motorists who were worried about driving with cracked glass can receive mobile glass repair and replacement at home or even roadside. Even in many rural communities mobile glass repair is available. A wide range of available windshields and windows with available discounts make the actual purchase of glass far easier and more affordable.  All together this means a careful motorist who value shops can get the exact auto glass they need at a price that fits any budget.

Auto Glass replacementMany people think auto insurance is crazy and confusing. But a little research can help you sort out the complexities of car insurance.

Coverage beyond the legally required minimum is always an option. Procuring additional coverage will be more expensive, though doing this may be worthwhile. Using uninsured motorist protection protects you from financial liability if you are the victim of a hit-and-run accident, or if any driver that causes you damage is not carrying insurance.

Some companies offer discounts for those who do not log mileage in excess of 7500 miles per year. If you are looking to cut back on your car insurance costs, this is a great place to begin.

TIP! Raise your deductible to save money on your premium. It is a bit risky, but it will help you save on your insurance premiums.

During the first sixty days of a contract, an insurance company has the ability to drop your coverage without an explanation. This is when insurance companies will review your driving record to see whether or not you are a high risk. Getting your policy terminated will give you higher premiums in the long run.

Make sure to stay informed about basic insurance terms prior to searching for a company to get a policy from. Every state has their own regulations, but insurance basics remain the same. Understanding as much as you can about car insurance before you set out to buy will help you find the right coverage for your needs and your budget.

If you want to lower your insurance premium, consider raising your deductibles. By opting for a higher deductible, you can save on premiums because you are not as prone to file a claim for a minor incident. However, if you must file a claim, you will have to pay more due to the deductible. That’s an important point to keep in mind.

TIP! The best thing you can do to to keep your car insurance payments low is to maintain a spotless driving record. Getting in an accident will drastically increase your rates.

Be sure of what coverage you need when it comes to buying car insurance. Not all coverage options make sense for everyone. However, collision coverage can be a wise choice for those who find themselves in a lot of accidents.

If you are seeking to purchase auto insurance, make sure you shop around for premium quotes from various insurance carriers. Rates can be very different depending on which company you choose. You should shop you auto insurance at least once a year to guarantee you are receiving the best rates. Make sure this year’s quote is for the same coverage as last year.

Choosing a higher deductible will lower your insurance premiums. A high deductible can cost you more money if you have a accident, but it will pay any damages. However, small incidents are your responsibility. Having a high deductible makes sense if your car has a low value.

TIP! Let your insurance agent know if you see a lower rate and are thinking of switching. Sometimes, your current agent can match any lower offers that you find.

In many states, auto insurance doesn’t insure only the vehicle, but the person driving that vehicle, as well. Insurance companies rarely pay for accidents that occur when a friend or some other party is behind the wheel of the vehicle. If you do lend out your car, it is probably a good idea to purchase coverage for extra drivers, though this will cost you more money.

When it comes to auto insurance and elderly drivers, it is important to realize that the highest percentage of accidents during daylight hours are caused by senior citizens. This could be problematic as insurance rates will rise and it may prove difficult to find insurance coverage quickly.

Keep careful records when you are involved in an accident. Insurance companies need documentation and proof. Cell phone pictures provide the perfect record of the damage and location of an accident. Another option is to leave a disposable camera in your glove box so that you have it on hand in case of an accident.

TIP! Pay attention when driving, as this will help you to keep your premiums at a minimum. Fewer traffic tickets or automobile accidents will lower your premiums and may qualify you for additional discounts.

If you are thinking of purchasing aftermarket enhancements for your car, check to find out how much will be covered by your insurance if there is theft or damage. Most of the time, insurance companies do not cover these items.

Some coverage items are not worth the extra cash though. By way of illustration, those with old cars of minimal value may consider dropping collision coverage from their policy. By dropping from this your coverage, your premiums could go down significantly. Comprehensive and liability are other aspects of your insurance that you can look into removing or raising deductibles for.

Before choosing auto insurance, you should get quotes from a number of different vehicle insurers. You may have to search for the ideal rate.

TIP! Attorneys and lawsuits are generally not worth the expense and hassle unless a claim is over $25,000. In such a case, it’s usually a better strategy to try to reach an agreement with the insurance adjuster.

While collision coverage is expensive, so are car repairs in the event that an accident is your fault. Though collision coverage may seem a little expensive, it is a lot easier to pay for the coverage than to pay for the cost to fix a vehicle.

Think about paying for your whole insurance policy at once. This is because insurance agencies frequently charge an extra fee for allowing monthly payments. Start putting money aside for the next time you renew your policy so that you can pay for the whole premium at once and pocket the savings.

It is a bad idea to buy a teenager a car. For the first few years, it’s wise to have your teenager share a family vehicle. Adding them to your preexisting insurance plan will be much cheaper. It’s even possible to get a discount, if your kids get good grades.

If you are in a well-know organization, you could get some good discounts on premiums. AARP is a great organization to get auto insurance discounts through.

Think carefully about buying after-market add-ons if you really do not need them. Luxury items are nice, but they really aren’t that necessary. If your car is totaled or stolen, your insurance will not reimburse you for the damage done to it.

Keeping your license clean is crucial when it comes to how much you pay for insurance. If accidents or tickets appear on your driving record, they may lead to your insurance rates going up. If your driving record is poor, consider taking a safe driving course to improve your driving and help avoid future accidents and citations. It can reduce your premiums over time.

All of the ideas you will read here can be used by most people. These tips can help you to get the best deals on auto insurance for the coverage that you need. This article should have shed some light on how to get the best coverage possible for a price you can afford.
